About Us

Poplar Ridge Farm – Our Story

Poplar Ridge Farm was established in 1976 with the purchase of 47 acres in Hughesville, Maryland. In 2001, we expanded by adding another 29 acres. Our passion for farming was inspired by my parents—Clement and Mary Tydings—and Willis’s uncle, Carl Phelps. From them, we inherited a deep appreciation for agriculture and a love for working with animals.

Between 1976 and 1983, Poplar Ridge operated as a tobacco farm. In 1977, our journey as a 4-H family began when our son, Lucky, joined the Clovers 4-H Club. He was soon followed by his sisters, Shannon and Kara. Willis and I became 4-H leaders in 1978, and over time, all five members of the Emory family were honored as Maryland 4-H All Stars.

Throughout the years, Lucky, Shannon, and Kara showed cattle, hogs, goats, sheep, and poultry. All three were members of the Charles County 4-H Poultry Judging Team, with all three of them earning spots on the Maryland State Team and traveling across the country to compete.

Our Cattle

Our Polled Hereford cattle have been exhibited at both local and national shows. In 2004, seeking to grow our operation, our family made the decision to sell the Maryland farm and purchase 200 acres in King George, Virginia. This was a significant transition, but it allowed us to expand our cattle and hay operations. Today, we raise Polled Herefords as well as a herd of Angus/Hereford crosses.

Our Commitment to Farming

At the heart of our farm there has always been a commitment to producing quality livestock and crops while educating others. This mission has led us into agritourism, where we share our knowledge of animal husbandry, soil conservation, and plant management with the public.

Today, Poplar Ridge Farm is managed by the next generation—our children and their spouses—who are continuing the family tradition. We’re proud to pass down our values, work ethic, and love for the land to our grandchildren, ensuring the legacy of Poplar Ridge Farm lives on.
